“The training period to become an engraver is 3 years and ends with the final examination to become a state-certified steel engraver. The qualification is equivalent to a journeyman’s certificate (§ 40 HWO) in the trade.
Manual skills, drawing skills, a sense of form and spatial imagination are basic requirements for this profession. Technical understanding is just as important, as working on machines and on computers has now become indispensable in the engraver’s profession.
Ornamental motifs, but also figurative representations are engraved using flat engraving, i.e. using a stylus by hand or an engraving machine, into the surface of jewelry and other objects such as watches, boxes and bowls. Common tasks for the flat engraver include the creation of printing templates, e.g. for banknotes and securities, but also the production of copper and steel engravings based on artistic designs.
In the field of relief engraving, plastic punching and embossing tools as well as cast models are manufactured. The engraver works here as a model and mold maker. The product range includes jewelry parts, coins, figures and much more. All projects are preceded by an intensive design process. Sketches, drawings, models and their implementation are accompanied from the beginning by design and practical teachers.” (source: website of the Berufsfachschule)
