Münzplatz
8001 Zürich
After the Reformation, the Augustinian Church was converted into the Zurich Mint. The Augustinian church served this purpose from 1596 to 1842, and the mint is said to have been located where the choir is today. In 1841, for the first time since the Reformation, Zurich’s Catholics were granted the right to build a church in the city. They were given the site on Münzplatz with the remains of the Augustinian church. The present church was built in 1841 in the neo-Gothic style.
A new site for a Zurich mint was no longer needed because with the founding of the modern Swiss Confederation, coinage became a federal matter and was now minted centrally in Bern for all the cantons.
