Numismatic Vienna – Always Worth a Visit!
There is only one city in the world where you can study numismatics at degree level. The Department of Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna is a unique phenomenon that acknowledges the fact that numismatics as an academic discipline originated in Vienna. Joseph Hilarius Eckhel, the father of scholarly numismatics, worked here. You can still meet him today at the Maria Theresia Monument, where the great minds of their time are honoured with statues. In general, Vienna’s numismatic past is ubiquitous. The former director of the Imperial Coin Cabinet, Valentin Jamerai Duval, greets you as you climb the central staircase of the Museum of Natural History.
With so much numismatic tradition, it goes without saying that there are many coins and medals on display in the city’s various museums. There are also numerous coin dealers. Some of them are legendary Viennese veterans. Shopping here is a pleasure. Choose from specialised coin dealers and auction houses – and do not limit your experience to the city centre.
Last but not least, Vienna is still home to the Austrian Mint, whose products have been winning COTY award after COTY award for years. You can buy coins from the mint on the spot, as it has its own shop. It is easy to find, especially in the run-up to Christmas. There is always a long queue, as the Viennese stock up on gold coins. These pieces will be placed under the Christmas tree as presents for their children and grandchildren.
As you can see: Vienna is certainly worth a numismatic visit!
