The Academic Coin Cabinet is part of the Antiquities Collections (formerly the Archaeological Museum) of the University of Jena. The university’s own collection of ancient and medieval coins was designed as a teaching collection and today (2024) comprises 1,245 specimens. The coins were mainly collected between 1846 and 1920. The focus is clearly on Roman coins from the Republic to late antiquity.

The most important part of the Academic Coin Cabinet is a permanent loan from the “Klas-sik Stiftung Weimar”, a collection that once included 4,346 coins and now numbers 4,313 coins from all eras of the Roman Empire. The Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm Schmidt (1786 – 1846) collected these during the first half of the 19th century.

Detailed information on the Academic Coin Cabinet can be found here.
