Hamburg – The Hanseatic City of Gold
For centuries, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg was one of the economic centres where merchants not only made large amounts of money, but also invested their earnings in gold. In the 17th century, the Hamburg Girobank began to produce multiple gold coins of 10 ducats, which were particularly popular for saving purposes. Saving turned into collecting, and to this day, ‘portugalöser’ coins from Hamburg with their ever-changing motifs are considered a supreme discipline of German numismatics.
In other words: Hamburg has a lot to offer numismatically. Many museums have coin collections of all sizes. And there is the old-established Verein der Münzenfreunde in Hamburg e. V., a coin club that has held more than 1,100 meetings in its more than 100-year history. Last but not least, there are numerous coin dealers waiting to serve their customers.
