Madrid: Where People Meet Every Sunday to Trade Coins

For almost a century, coin and stamp collectors have met every Sunday morning in Plaza Mayor for an open-air coin exchange. This alone shows that coin collecting plays a central role in the Spanish capital. Today, there are still many coin dealers around Plaza Mayor, offering a wide range of coins.

But you can do much more than add new specimens to your collection in Madrid. Many museums present numismatic highlights! There is a large museum dedicated exclusively to coins and stamps. It is run by the FNMT, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Tibre – commonly known as the Spanish Mint – which is based in Madrid. Some of you may recognise this institution as Casa de Papel, the mint that became the secret star of the Money Heist TV series.

If you are still thinking about when to visit Madrid, we recommend the last weekend in June. This is when the Evento Numismático Internacional takes place, an absolute must for anyone interested in the coins of the Spanish-speaking world.
