NUMISMATIC MUNICH
You could call Munich Germany’s secret numismatic capital, because no other city offers such a concentrated range of top-class coin dealers, service providers, mints and coin collections.
Let’s start with the Bavarian State Coin Collection, which – in the German-speaking world – is only surpassed by the collections of Berlin and Vienna (and only in terms of size, not quality). Or the many coin shops crowded between the cathedral and Maximiliansplatz. Few people know that Munich has not one but two mints. The Bavarian State Mint, where a large proportion of German euros are minted, and the private B.H. Mayer mint (B.H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt). Today it is one of the most innovative companies in the industry. When new features appear on commemorative coins, they were usually first conceived at B.H. Mayer.
Incidentally, there are still many coin shops in Munich that do not hold auctions and therefore have a rich stock. It is not for nothing that many foreign visitors arrive a few days BEFORE the Numismata, which brings together the world of the classical coin trade in Munich once a year.
