Background

The ‘Historisches Museum am Hohen Ufer’, as it is officially known, was founded in 1903 as the ‘Vaterländisches Museum der Stadt Hannover’. It comprised the departments of city history, regional history and the folklore of Lower Saxony.

The collections of the Historisches Museum Hannover (Historical Museum Hannover) include a wide range of objects from the Middle Ages to the present day. In recent decades, the original collections have been supplemented by collections on contemporary history, economic and engineering history and migration history.

The Collection

The Coins and Medals collection is closely linked to the museum’s departments on the history of the city and the state. It includes coins minted by the city of Hanover up to 1674, coins minted by the sovereign from the Middle Ages to 1866 and, to a lesser extent, coins and banknotes of the German Reich up to 1945.

The numismatic holdings are supplemented by special collections of substitute and emergency money. Here you will find tokens from mostly Hanoverian companies and institutions since the mid-19th century. As part of the museum’s ‘World War II Collection’, printed and minted substitute/emergency money has been collected since 1914, issued by companies, local authorities and the army for various purposes, including in the early stages of the First World War, when small change was scarce.

The collection of medals is very heterogeneous. The medals of the former Welf dynasty, dating from the end of the 17th century to the end of the 19th century, form an important group. From the 19th century onwards, numerous medals were issued to commemorate important personalities, anniversaries, associations, exhibitions and outstanding individual events.

Events

So far, only a few coins and medals have been incorporated into the online catalogue.

Here you can find Hannover emergency money from the First World War and the inflation period.
