“The numismatic collection of the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur is one of the museum’s oldest and most extensive collections. Since the Münster department of the Verein für Geschichte und Altertumskunde Westfalens (Association for History and Ancient Studies in Westphalia) began collecting coins and medals for its museum in 1825, the collection has grown to over 100,000 items. Transferred in 1907 to the Landesmuseum für die Provinz Westfalen, the predecessor institution of today’s LWL-Museum, the collection is now one of the largest in Germany and Europe.

As a universal numismatic collection, it covers all historical periods and regions of monetary and numismatic history, but the focus has always been on Westphalia. The collection of historical Westphalia and neighbouring areas is certainly the best in the world. However, it also contains significant collections of Greek and Roman antiquity, the European Middle Ages – especially the Carolingian period of the 8th and 9th centuries, and the High Middle Ages from the 10th to 12th centuries – and the early modern period. It has notable holdings of medals from the 16th to 21st centuries, as well as paper money, tokens, securities, minting dies, seals and related objects.” (Source: LWL-Museum Münster).
