Background
The museum was founded in 1889 as the first municipal museum in Hannover. Its holdings are based on bequests and donations from private collectors such as August Kestner, Friedrich Culemann and many others. Today the museum has four collections: Egyptian Art, Ancient Cultures, Applied Arts/Design and Coins and Medals.
The Collection
With around 100,000 pieces, the museum’s coin collection is the largest of its kind in northern Germany. It covers 2600 years of monetary history, starting with the oldest coins from the ancient Mediterranean. It also includes coins from the Roman Republic and Empire, as well as lead seals and coins from the Byzantine Empire.
Among the medieval and early modern coins, the bracteates and coins from the area of present-day Lower Saxony are particularly noteworthy. Other special features are the collections of ancient Greek coins from Olympia and German coins from the 19th century, as well as an extensive collection of Asian coins. A numismatic reference library is available by appointment.
Events
About 200 coins and medals are on display in the museum’s permanent exhibition, which is divided into cultural and historical sections. From time to time there are special exhibitions on numismatic themes or in a wider context.
Numerous publications make the collection of coins and medals accessible. The old catalogues have been digitised and can be downloaded here:
There is also an online catalogue of coins and medals, which is constantly updated.
An online exhibition of Byzantine coins can be found here.
Some of the coins and medals are also published online.
