“The Oriental Coin Cabinet of the University of Jena is the second largest public German collection of oriental coins (with more than 21,000 objects). In the 19th century, the Oriental Coin Cabinet was a center for Islamic numismatics at a German university that was probably unique in its kind. The collection formed one of the foundations for this branch of knowledge. Until shortly after the First World War, it existed in personal union with the Oriental Seminar. After a vacancy of seventy-five years, a chair for Semitic Philology and Islamic Studies was re-established in Jena in 1994. Since then, the Oriental Coin Cabinet has been rebuilt as a historical research instrument. Today, around 1,500 objects from the collection can be viewed in the virtual coin cabinet KENOM!
KENOM is the name of a virtual coin portal in which scientific coin and banknote collections are recorded and published. The sequence of letters stands for “Cooperative development and use of object data from coin collections”.
