The society was founded in 1982 at Elgersburg Castle as a working group for Thuringian coin and monetary history and was renamed the Society for Thuringian Coin and Medal Studies e.V. in 1991. The aim of the society is essentially to intensively study Thuringian monetary history and to disseminate the results of this historical research area by publishing yearbooks. These are published by the Leipzig Coin Dealership and Auction house Höhn. All topics dealt with by members of the society deal with the historical region of Thuringia.
Professional numismatists and experts from related sciences such as history or archaeology are welcome as guests at the lectures at the annual meetings. Specialist lectures followed by discussions and private exchanges of experience in small groups provide information.
The society has published several medals in the past. Most of the stamps were designed and cut by the medalist Helmut König from Zella-Mehlis. The cast medal for the 2002 meeting in Saalfeld was made by the Dresden medalist Peter G. Güttler (source)
