The Classical Numismatic Group is among the world’s leading coin dealers and auction houses, particularly for ancient and Islamic coins as well as coins from around the world. Since 1991, it has maintained a permanent base in London, where a large team of experienced numismatists advises clients. The sizeable and dedicated team, led by Paul Hill, covers most aspects of numismatics and is therefore a competent contact for even the most advanced collector.

CNG clients in London have access to the full spectrum of numismatic services. Direct sales and consignments to all CNG auctions are possible on-site. In addition, there is a small but excellent inventory.

Successor to the British Prestigious Firm B. A. Seaby

In 1990, Victor England learned during the London Coinex that the British prestigious firm B. A. Seaby Ltd. was seeking a successor. The coin dealership, founded as early as 1926, was then known and networked worldwide. It owed its outstanding reputation in collector circles to its widely distributed catalogs of Greek and Roman coinage. Before the introduction of the Internet, English-speaking collectors did not identify their coins according to the much too expensive RIC, but rather used “Seaby.”

The decision was not difficult for Victor England. Seaby became the springboard to be closer to the European collector community. As early as March 1991, his business partner Eric MacFadden took over the management on-site. Under him, the Classical Numismatic Group developed into one of the most important partners for ancient coin collectors in Europe as well.

Commitment to Scientific Numismatics

For the Classical Numismatic Group, it is of central importance to mediate between the latest research and the collector. All CNG catalogs are based on the latest state of research; all commentaries are written in a way that even beginners understand.

In keeping with the Seaby tradition, CNG also operates as a publisher. It is a passion project of the company to continue the Handbook of Greek Coinage, of which ten volumes have been published so far.

CNG is known as a major supporter of scholarship. British numismatics benefits from this. For example, the CNG Roman and Byzantine Fund, administered by the Royal Numismatic Society, awards grants for scholarly work in Roman and Byzantine numismatics. Additionally, CNG sponsors the annual CNG Lecture at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum.
