Numismatica Genevensis SA was founded in 1988 by the numismatist Dr. Alain Baron. He shared his enthusiasm for exceptional coins with many people he came into contact with. Soon, collectors both in Switzerland and abroad were among his clientele.

The first auction of Numismatica Genevensis SA took place in 2000. Since then, the rule has been: NGSA’s catalogs always feature spectacular coins. This leads to record-breaking sales. In 2008, NGSA set the first of many: The auction house sold a Hadrian’s sestertius for over 2 million Swiss francs. At the time, this sestertius was the most expensive ancient coin ever sold. The most recent record dates back to 2025. The iconic centén, the heaviest Spanish gold coin, minted in Segovia in 1609, can now call itself the most expensive European coin (apart from Russian coins).

In 2015, a superlative auction took place to benefit two foundations: Collectors Baron Lorne Thyssen- Bornemisza and Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan jointly sold their collections under the title 35 Years of Friendship – Masterpieces of Greek Coinage .

Recently, Numismatica Genevensis SA made headlines in the Middle East: Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima, Mother of the Nation, the Swiss auction house held a highly acclaimed numismatic exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which was attended by thousands of visitors per day.
