Tradition meets innovation – these words sum up what Swissmint is all about.
Tradition, because the most important task of the mint in Bern is to produce the Swiss franc. After all, Swissmint holds the record for the oldest circulation coin in the world. Incidentally, this is not the Swiss franc, but the 10-rappen piece, which has been in circulation with the same design since 1879.
Innovation, because Swissmint’s engineers are constantly perfecting their minting products. Or, as Deputy General Manager Jan Niklas Betz puts it: “Our proof coin set is the Ferrari of coin sets. An issue of higher quality simply does not exist.”
In addition, Swissmint has launched several “firsts” in recent years, starting with the first Swiss color coin (2019), the first living person on a Swiss coin and the world’s smallest gold coin (both in 2020), as well as Switzerland’s first high-relief issue (2023).
Swissmint is proud to immortalize on its coins what its country Switzerland is proud of.
Today, this includes not only Heidi and the like, but also CERN, the birthplace of the Internet, and the wonderfully unconventional artist Jean Tinguely. And you can look forward to another highlight in 2025: on 1 July, Swissmint will celebrate the 100th anniversary of a numismatic icon by issuing a 100-franc special gold coin based on the 100-franc Vreneli of 1925. With a fabulous new design!
